Neil Simon's
THE GOOD DOCTOR
Directed by BJ Williams
Set in turn-of-the-century Russia, The Good
Doctor is a joyous blending of Neil Simon and Anton Chekhov.
Simon adapted 10 of Chekhov’s short stories, some hilariously funny and some
sweetly sentimental into a brilliant Broadway success.
NEEDED FOR THE PRODUCTION ARE:
5 men and 5 women, ages 25-65+
Included in the 10 member ensemble should be:1 young looking male,1 young looking female,1 male who can sing, and 1 female who can sing
All cast members will take part in 2 or 3 of the stories, each requiring a
complete change of age and character.
Requirements include good physicality, a sense of comic timing, and a
willingness to make strong choices and take brave risks.
Approximately 25 characters appear in the following stories:
q A struggling Chekhov introduces himself and his stories.
q A clerk fears demotion because he sneezes on his employer.
q A young governess and her mistress settle a dispute.
q A dental assistant attempts to pull his first tooth.
q Two lonely elders sing a bittersweet love duet.
q A man teaches the audience how to seduce a woman.
q A man offers to drown himself for money.
q A small town girl auditions for a big city play
q An obnoxious peasant woman attacks a gout-ridden banker.
q A father hopes to initiate his son into the mysteries of sex
Cold readings from the script will be used for auditions
