J.B. Priestly's classic thriller, set in pre WW I Britain, takes us into the comfortable and complacent world of the Birling family which is shattered forever when a police Inspector interrupts their dinner party to investigate the supposed suicide of a young girl. As his questions reveal that each of them was connected to her and may be responsible for her death, they, along with the audience, are forced to examine their moral consciences and way of life.
Characters include:
ARTHUR BIRLING: 50's - a self-made
man; founder and owner of a successful manufacturing company
GERALD CROFT: 30's - fiancee to Birling's daughter; self-assured and
aware of his good looks and intelligence
ERIC BIRLING: late 20's - rebellious son to Arthur Birling
INSPECTOR GOOLE: 40's - 50's; a combination of Hercule Pourot, Sherlock
Holmes, and Columbo
SYBIL BIRLING: late 40's; wife to Arthur, born to her elevated station
and proud of it
SHEILA BIRLING: 20's; daughter to the Birlings, pretty and vivacious
EDNA: the maid (did she, or didn't she??)
