Picasso at the Lapine Agile
a play by Steve Martin
directed by Donna Johns

Wednesday, September 5th and Thursday, September 6th, 2001
beginning at 7:30 at Metcalf Hall, Winchester Unitarian Church
478 Main St. (at Mystic Valley Pkwy) Winchester

Auditions will be conducted using scenes from the script. Rehearsals will be held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays beginning on September 9th. Performances are scheduled for November 3, 4, 10, and 11 at 8:00, and Sunday November 12, 2001 at 2:00.

Join us as the hall of the Winchester Unitarian Church is transformed into the Lapine Agile, a Parisian bistro at the turn of the last century. Sip wine, mingle with the artists, and eavesdrop on the stimulating, thought-provoking conversation between the two men who helped shape the 20th century: Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein. Time and space become relative and...
you never know who you might meet at the Lapine Agile!

CHARACTERS (ages are suggested, but all things are relative!)

Albert Einstein (early 20's) Humorously resigned to not being understood, he neverthless expresses himself with a zest for his theory and for life.
Pablo Picasso (early 20's) A pasionate and romantic soul who is so wrapped up in his art he can forget that lesser mortals have feelings.
Freddy (30's or older) The bartender at Lapine Agile and able to hold his own in a battle of wits with the bar's visitors.
Gaston (50's or older) Representing the old century, he is decidedly French, decidedly cranky, and needs to use the bathroom frequently.
Germaine (20's or older) Both sexy and wise, she quietly sleeps with Freddy and Picasso without creating a fuss.
Suzanne (20's or older) Naive and romantic, she spent an afternoon of passion with Picasso and is shocked to find out he doesn't remember her.
Sagot (30's or older) A cynical art dealer who views art only as a way to make money.
Charles Dabernow Schmendiman (early 20's) He believes that he will shape the new century and doesn't understand that he is a brash fool.
The Countess (30's or older) A sophisticated woman of the world and Einstein's patroness.
A Female Admirer (teens to twenties) A groupie who is infatuated with Schmendiman.
A "Visitor" (20's to 40's) A singer from Memphis with blue suede shoes and hips that swivel.
